ABOUT THE UNIT

Health, safety and wellbeing are all vital components to leading a successful life. Health and Physical Education [HPE] plays an integral role in promoting and achieving a healthy lifestyle; which can impact every aspect of a person’s life. Through engagement with this unit, students will develop the knowledge, skills and experience to lead informed, safe, healthy and active lives.

The Year 10 HPE curriculum supports students to refine and apply strategies for maintaining a positive outlook and evaluating behavioural expectations in different leisure, social, movement and online situations. This unit will facilitate the curriculum objectives, providing students with the opportunity to learn to critically analyse and apply health and physical activity information, to devise and implement personalised plans for maintaining lifelong safe, healthy and active habits. The curriculum also provides opportunities for students to analyse how participation in physical activity and sport influence an individual’s identity, and explore the role participation plays in shaping cultures. The students will propose strategies to support the development of preventive health practices, that build and optimise community health, safety and wellbeing.

Students in this unit will have the opportunity to learn with the use of ICT through investigation; by searching, locating and generating data to explore, examine, discuss and critique information concerning healthy, safe and active lifestyles. They will utilise ICT to communicate; sharing and exchanging information by collaboration, to purposefully construct knowledge. Students will also apply social and ethical practices when managing and operating ICT, to assess the risks associated with online environments and establish appropriate security strategies. And finally, students will have the opportunity to design creative digital solutions when preparing, delivering and critiquing a class presentation for the community.

This unit will begin with an investigation into the history of sport and participation in Australia, exploring the ethical and social impacts sport and physical activity plays in our culture. Knowledge and understanding will be developed in making healthy choices, safe behaviours and managing situations where their own or others’ health, safety and wellbeing may be at risk; including completing CPR training and assessment. The students constructed knowledge and ability to critique health information, will be applied in the unit assessment, which involves creating a health campaign; to promote health, safety and wellbeing in their community. The curriculum content for the HPE subject has the power to transform future generations, with a focus on health, safety and wellbeing, this unit can change the way students think, feel and understand the benefits of lifelong physical activity and making informed, safe, healthy decisions.
